Mabon, or Autumnal Equinox, takes place around 21 September, and consists of rest after work at the end of the harvest. Thanksgiving.
Once again the hours of light and darkness are balanced, although night begins to dominate. It is time to make all the preparations for the darkness of the year and for the end of the year at Samhain.
This is the time when the energy of the archetype (in this case of Greek Mitology) of Persephone and the Black Pan predominates. Everything begins to rest and the Sun, the God, begins to decay in preparation for its sacrifice, for its surrender to the Mother.
It is a good time for meditations on reincarnation in preparation for the Night of the Ancestors. You can celebrate Mabon as you like, today I propose several activities you can do during these days, alone or with your family and a ritual to perform on the night of September 21.
Activities: CLEANSING AND COMPLETE PROJECTS:
Spring is time for cleansing and also to complete unfinished projects.
So perfome a energy cleansing in your house, get rid of everything you don't need, physically and energetically and get ready to the winter.

PLANT BULBS: This is an excellent activity especially for children. This is time to plant tree and shrub seeds. They have all winter in the dark to establish and germinate. Plant bulbs that will hide in the ground until spring arrives. Make each one of them a hope, an idea or an aspiration for spring and wait for their little green noses to poke above the ground.
COOKING: Mabon Shortbread
- 3 cups of strong white flour - 500 ml buttermilk - 1 teaspoon of baking soda - I handful of dried fruit of your choice: currants, dates, sultanas...
Put the flour and fruits in a large bowl. Make a well in the centre. Stir in the salt and baking soda and pour in the buttermilk. Mix them well with a wooden spoon until the dough is elastic. Transfer to a board and cover with a thin layer of flour. Pat it into a round shape with your hands. Take a sharp knife and lightly score into eight sections.
Place on a pre-greased baking tray and place the buttermilk loaf in athe oven for about 20-25 minutes, about 180Cº. Keep an eye on it. When the bread is ready, it will change colour and sound hollow when you tap the base. Let it cool completely on a wire rack.
Below is a ritual to perform on the night of Mabon. Remember that this is a guide and that you can adjust some aspects according to your needs and beliefs; the important thing is that you feel comfortable with the process.
For this ritual you will need: - Incense - Chalice (cup) of wine - Athame (dagger or ritual knife) - Pentacle (you can draw it if you don't have one) - Ribbons of autumnal colours to tie to the Athame (red, orange, yellow, gold and/or brown) - Three candles (one white, one red and one black) - Cauldron - Ivy (to place inside the cauldron)
Place your altar or work table facing North.
Closing the Circle: There are different ways of closing the circle, more or less complicated and/or elaborate. It will also depend on your traditions or origins. Mainly you need to draw the circle and ask for protection. E.g: Draw the circle with the Athame or ritual knife and call upon the elementals at the cardinal points. Starting from the North and in a clockwise direction. Invoke the elementals and the Goddess and the God.
Place the three candles around the cauldron and say: I INVOKE THE BLESSED LADY, QUEEN OF HARVESTS AND BESTOWER OF LIFE AND ABUNDANCE SINCE BEFORE TIME BEGAN. I BESEECH YOU TO GRANT ME YOUR JOY AND BEAUTY, YOUR STRENGTH AND PROSPERITY. Turn to the ivy in the cauldron and say: I INVOKE THE LORD OF HARVESTS, SACRED KING, BESTOWER OF WEALTH AND PROTECTION SINCE BEFORE TIME BEGAN. I PRAY YOU GRANT ME YOUR STRENGTH AND LAUGHTER, YOUR POWER AND PROSPERITY. Take with one hand the dagger with the ribbons, and with the other the chalice with the wine and say: LIFE HAS ALWAYS COMPLETED ITS CYCLE AND PRODUCED NEW LIFE IN THE ETERNAL CHAIN OF ALL THAT LIVES. IN HONOUR OF THE ANCIENT GODS, I MARK THE COMPLETION OF MY LIFE AND THE HARVEST OF THE LESSONS RECEIVED DURING THIS YEAR.
Go around the circle clockwise three times and starting from the East chant: TURN THE WHEEL OF THE YEAR AND THE REWARD COMES Return to the altar and set the Athame aside. Place the chalice of wine on the pentacle for a moment. As he makes the toasts that follow, he raises the chalice high in each toast before taking a sip: TO THE GOOD SEASONS THAT HAVE DEPARTED AND TO THE GOOD SEASONS TO COME. BLESS THEM. FOR THE GODDESS. MAY SHE BRING PEACE REALIZATION TO ALL HER CHILDREN. BLESS HER. FOR THE GOD. MAY SHE PROTECT HER FAITHFUL AND GRANT ME PROSPERITY AND HAPPINESS. MAY WE MEET JOYFUL, MAY WE PART JOYFUL AND MAY WE MEET JOYFUL AGAIN. BLESS YOU.
Close the Circle: Give thanks and farewell to the Gods and elementals you have invoked. Extinguish the candles with a candle snuffer. Break the circle with the Athame in a counter-clockwise direction, starting in the North.
